Recap: Advertising Week panel "Social Shorts: Q&A with Leading Minds in Social Media

A great week in New York City this past September for AdWeek.  'Adweek is an unparalleled resource for leaders across multiple industries who rely on its content to help them do their job better.'

My participation on this panel was in partnership with ListenFirst media who became a trusted partner in data analytics for Hackensack Meridian Health.   On the panel we discussed topics surrounding social media ROI, KPIs, and the future of social media.  Major takeaways from this great panel was the fact that no matter what type of industry you are in or size, the foundation and questions in the daily evolving world of digital media forces us all to adapt and use different strategies in order to define our own goals and conversions.

Podcast Results Now Live in Google Searches

Have you ever wanted to create a podcast? Creating podcasts have become a staple for most major and personal brands.  More than ever you have access to the latest platforms and software for mobile and desktops for producing podcasts. According to Edison Research, "The audience for podcasting grew significantly in the past year. Today, 51% of Americans 12+ have ever listened to a podcast, with 32% having listened in the past month, and 22% in the past week."  In the spirit of learning and self producing,  I decided to start producing my own podcast (read all about why HERE.)

There are so many benefits to producing your own podcast from launching a brand, creating brand awareness, promoting a product, project or events.  With today's podcast software you can share onto any social media platform and drastically increase your audio plays by how much you really promote it via social media.  I think podcasts are really a vehicle for  digital media.   Its definitely a different animal than radio, and it allows you have to complete control as the broadcaster, producer and promoter. Now more than ever, we have so much control over our own branding and reach and this all without dropping the large amounts of money to promote that you normally would for traditional media.

In all the excitement about the benefits of podcasting, there was more one more important update that was announced by Google recently, which is indexing the actual podcasts and featuring them in search results!!! OMG!   How amazing, this will increase your reach, your listeners and drive consumers to your brand, how amazing?   I finally discovered mine in search results today and could not be happier!   I will be monitoring through analytics how much of a referrer Google will be to my numbers.   Here is an article that outlines the new update from Google

Using Video In Your Digital Marketing Strategy to Increase Brand Reach

Listen to the below podcast:

Personal Development: Why It Matters.

I'm a firm believer in personal development for personal and career reasons.   Continuously learning new things and skills can always enhance your performance professionally and in life.   I've had experience working in many areas of media starting my career off in television as an intern and then working my way  up to producer for an Emmy winning talk television shows.  I later moved into documentary programming and writing, which enabled me to move into the digital space, where most content was starting to move in to.

In those years in order to learn the digital space, I put myself into the trenches of learning all about digital media by producing my own content.  Around 2008 I started my first blog called, Italian American Girl, which featured all content about growing up Italian American.   I produced a ton of content in a short time span and then began experimenting onto social media.  Myspace first, Facebook later, Twitter and Youtube were the front-runners, amazing to see that Twitter and Youtube are still the dark horses that in my opinion will win the social media race in the end.   As I moved into the digital media world, I expanded my knowledge of traditional media and began to experiment with content on every platform, which also forced me to produce for the medium.  Today when you hire someone to work in digital media, you have to ask them if they know all the platforms, and can they produce traditional to customized for each, its a very rare skill(s) and no not that many people take the time to learn the platforms, their capabilities, or their metric systems.   As I moved from producing in tradition TV to digital, I learned on my own and basically became self taught.

My first experience with social media experts was while visiting the infamous Gary Vaynerchuk at this store in Springfield, N.J., where he was just starting to talk about how he used social media to scale his father's liquor's store to e-commerce.  Gary is now a gazillionaire, and I believe I may have made into one of his first books where they featured a whole video on line.   Point is, if you want to succeed in this space or any other industry you must continuously learn, you must take the time to learn what, why and how new technology or trends are effecting the world,  Self taught and surrounding yourself with those who are succeeding at the experiments is the only way to go.  If you preach you must practice.

The Importance of Your Online Branding

Creating new content often and consistently is an important element to maintaining a successful online presence.  What you portray and package for your brand is ultimately how and why other company's and or brands want to do business with you.    A great way to keep your content fresh and consistent is to schedule photos and videos either of you, your team or your brand's features and stories.   Some other important things to remember are most consumers will online research first before they even get to you, so where is the number one place they do that..?  Google of course.   Make sure you are tagging, adding captions, so Google can index your photos and properly serve them up when someone does a search in your field, service or product.  Remember in today's world of algorithms and online reputation, a picture is worth a thousand a words or a thousand or more dollars, you want to create value and obviously you want more than a thousand, LOL.  That's the expression.

Here's a brief summary from Social Media Today that outlines a bit more on this topic of personal branding.

How to Optimize Your YouTube Strategy

One of the most underrated 'social media' platforms is Youtube. The reason I put it in quotes is because I believe there is a fine line and cross over with Youtube whether is just a video platform for content creators or it plays into both areas of content and digital media.  Using this platform has still yet to reach it peak with digital marketers.  There are tons of tricks and tips to getting your content to the top of the searches, also an important piece of information to remember is that Google owns Youtube, so search is the bible.   Below are tips on how to start optimizing your video content on Youtube.

Optimizing Your YouTube Strategy:
  1. Create playlists
  2. Choose the best thumbnails for your image, this is where most people choose whether or not to watch your video.
  3. Using cards throughout your video can help to promote the rest of your channel, calls to action or conversions.
  4. Research - Create content that is closely related to yours but search what's getting the most views, and begin to start producing your content loosely using some of those formulas.
Youtube Statistics:

  • The total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000.
  • 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!
  • Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day.
  • YouTube gets over 30 million visitors per day
  • In an average month, 8 out of 10 18-49 year-olds watch YouTube.
  • By 2025, half of the viewers under 32 will not subscribe to a pay-TV service.
  • 6 out of 10 people prefer online video platforms to live TV
  • The total number of hours of video watched on YouTube each month – 3.25 billion.
  • More than half of YouTube views come from mobile devices.
